Earl MacDonald’s large-ensemble works reflect a long-standing commitment to clarity of form, strong narrative arc, and writing that challenges both players and listeners.

These 17-piece jazz orchestra compositions have been performed by professional ensembles including the Airmen of Note, the Westchester Jazz Orchestra, the Millennium Jazz Orchestra, and the New London Big Band, as well as by university jazz ensembles across North America.

His charts are frequently programmed in academic settings not as stylistic exercises, but as vehicles for developing ensemble precision, harmonic awareness, and interpretive responsibility.

Selected institutions that have performed this music include the Eastman School of Music, Indiana University, the University of North Texas, Rutgers, McGill, Rowan University, Lawrence University, Grant MacEwan University, Marshall University, Amherst College, the University of Manitoba, and the University of Louisville.
