Strategies for Introducing Jazz Improvisation to Your Students

Type of Session: Clinic or lecture with demonstration
Grade Level: Middle School, High School

Improvisation becomes far less intimidating when it’s treated as a musical skill rather than a personality trait. Like tone, rhythm, or ensemble awareness, it develops through guided practice, clear constraints, and attentive listening.

In this session, I share practical strategies for introducing jazz improvisation in a way that builds confidence without oversimplifying the music. The focus is on process: how to structure rehearsals, choose appropriate repertoire, and create conditions where students can take risks without becoming overwhelmed.

Topics typically include repertoire selection for young ensembles, rehearsal routines that balance structure and play, improvisational games, and focused exercises that support musicianship, technique, and basic theoretical understanding. Throughout, the emphasis is on helping students hear form, feel time, and make intentional musical choices.

Participants are welcome to bring instruments for hands-on demonstration and discussion.

Equipment Needs: An electronic piano is helpful for demonstration purposes.
